Adolf Wolfli: From the Cradle to the Grave
author

Edited by Yukiko Koide
Lampoon House, Tokyo, 1999

The great master of Art Brut, Adolf Wolfli (1864-1930), died at Waldau Clinic in Berne, Switzerland, where he was admitted in 1895. He spent his last 35 years devoting to writing epics, making drawings, and composing music. His chef-d’oeuvre, a semi-autobiographical epic titled “From the Cradle to the Grave”, recounts Wölfli's imaginary life story in the form of a travelogue of the young protagonist, Doufi, who later becomes St. Adolph to conquer the world and rule the universe. The book includes 20 fancied maps and illustrations of the curious adventure and an interpretation of the works by Daniel Baumann from the Museum of Fine Arts Berne.
