HENRY DARGER: American Innocence ― Welcome to the Realms of the Unreal
Laforet Museum Harajuku, Tokyo
Henry Darger and his extraordinary work are one of the biggest mysteries in 20th Century American Art. This large-scale exhibition, with 64 panoramic illustrations accompanied by excerpts from Darger's fantastic novel "In the Realms of the Unreal", approaches both the reality and fiction of the enigmatic artist.
The exhibition consists of 5 parts: [Early Days] focusing on the artist's young days, [Archeology of Henry Darger's Room] discussing the things in which Darger was interested, [Welcome to the Realms of the Unreal] displaying his pictures, [History of My Life] introducing his biography and the personal effects found in his room, and [Homage] to Darger from contemporary creators who are inspired by Darger.
Richly sourced and drawing materials from many areas of Darger study, this landmark exhibition aims to interpret the double enigmas: Henry Darger's real life and legacy.
We would like to thank Ms. Kiyoko Lerner, Mr. Robert A Roth, and Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, Chicago, for their generous loan of the exhibits..
