This coming May 2013, Yukiko Koide Presents will host a solo show by an artist of rare gift, Naoyo Fukuda.Naoyo Fukuda (born 1967) takes books and stationery as her materials, and by laboriously, even obsessively applying hand embroidery and hole-piecing, creates expressions of diverse flickering meditations upon “reading” and “writing.” The show will comprise some 20 pieces, both retracing her major works thus far — “The Winged,” “From a Mossy Path to a Snowy Hollow,” “The Spirit of Words,” “Pilgrimage / Mail” — as well as fascinating new works of drawing and collage. I hope this small exhibition, affording a brush with the past to unlock the doors of the present, may give you a sense of her mysterious palindromic world.
