Yukiko Koide is pleased to present Soap, an exhibition of drawings by Eichi Shibata.
Kobo Syu is a creative workshop for developmentally disabled adults, located outside Tokyo (Kawaguchi city). Eichi Shibata (born in 1970), one of the oldest members, draws soap. With the classic board game Othello beside him, he enjoys the subtle sound of two chips striking, as well as fanning a book over his ear to feel airy breeze; senses sated, he draws the ephemeral properties of this everyday material. As if channeling the smooth foaming of soap, his pen runs all over the surface, with bubbles, whorls, and streams layering in bright colors, or frothing in monochromatic inks. The rich yet vaporous texture of soap fascinates him.
