Oswald Tschirtner (1920, Austria)

Oswald Tschirtner was raised by an uncle who was a Catholic priest and a devout aunt. The life of a quiet boy wishing to become a priest was disrupted by the war. When he joined the German army and fought in the Stalingrad campaign, he was taken as prisoner by the French. He was hospitalised in 1946 when he showed signs of mental disorder. He was instituionalised again in Gugging in 1954. Due to his obedient personality, he cannot say no when his doctor suggests him to draw. His extremely simplified bodies include a solitude and anxiety fundamental to human beings.
